This antique flintlock trade pistol is in remarkable condition and is a fine example of a commonly carried sidearm from the early 19th century Fur Trade period. The pistol is stocked in European walnut and trimmed in brass furniture. The stock retains its original finish and has no chips, cracks or repairs. The brass barrel and furniture have aged to a mellow patina. The .58 caliber bore is bright. This pistol will make a great addition to any firearms or Fur Trade collection. This pistol weighs 1.9 pounds.
The 7-3/4" brass barrel has aged to a mellow patina. The .58 caliber smooth bore is bright and in shootable condition. The breech end of the barrel is stamped with three English view and proof marks, the proof mark is circa post 1813. The top of the barrel is stamped LONDON near the breech. No front sight or rear sight is fitted, typical of pistols designed to be use at short range. The short rounded iron tang of the breech plug has a single bolt that passes through to engage the trigger plate below. The slot in the tang bolt is neatly aligned with the barrel. Two small iron pins retain the barrel to the forearm.
The walnut stock has a few minor handling marks, but is in excellent condition, considering that it is over 200 years old. The stock does not appear to have ever been refinished and there are no cracks, chips, or repairs. The brass furniture has aged to a mellow patina. The triggerguard is engraved with a starburst design on the bow, and the front finial is lightly border engraved. The sideplate is very similar in form to early 19th century British military rifle sideplates, and is border engraved. The ramrod passes through a small brass pipe with ringed ends, and a matching entry pipe with short pointed skirt that is border engraved. The tapered ramrod appears to be original. The loading end is fitted with a short brass cap, and the rear is fitted with an iron worm marked with a small x near the base.
This late flintlock was designed to be an inexpensive lock for trade. The lock does not have an external bridle on the pan and internally the lock also omits the bridle to support the tumbler. The lock functions correctly, with a strong mainspring and securely holds in the half and full cock notches. The lock and cock are both border engraved and have aged to a dark brown patina. The plate is marked SHARPE beneath the pan. The direct drilled vent is well centered on the pan, and the brass barrel has darkened around it from use. The single trigger provides a smooth release of the lock.
