The unique style of Southern Mountain rifles originated from the Western Carolinas into Eastern Tennessee during the late 18th and early 19th century. This Tennessee Mountain rifle is stocked in maple and trimmed in a limited amount of browned iron furniture in "poor boy" fashion. Antique Southern Mountain rifles are ofter trimmed in hand forged iron furniture, with hardware store locks. This rifle is fitted with a Davide Pedersoli Frontier flintlock and barrel, with R.E. Davis double set triggers. This rifle is unsigned as to a maker. Trigger reach is 14-1/2" and it weighs 7.7 pounds.

The Davide Pedersoli .36 caliber 39" barrel is 13/16" straight octagon. The .36 caliber bore is rifled with seven lands and grooves with a slow twist for a patched round ball. We recommend our .350" pure lead round ball, patched with .015" Ox-Yoke patching, lubricated with our Mink Oil tallow patch grease, if you require best accuracy. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The exterior of the barrel is finished to a dark brown with a light texture to the finish. A brass blade front sight is fitted behind the muzzle. A semi-buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed 11-1/4" ahead of the breech. Shooters with "older" eyes or corrective lenses will find this extra distance from the breech easier to use.

The maple stock displays attractive figure over the length of the stock. The stock was likely stained with Chromium trioxide or similar reagent. The stock has aged to a green tint when viewed under florescent lights. This rifle is used with some small dents, dings, and handling marks from use. All of the limited iron furniture; triggerguard, and ramrod pipes, are finished to a dark matte brown. No buttplate is fitted in "poor boy" style, instead a horn heel plate is fitted to help protect the heel from damage when being placed on the ground during loading and cleaning. A long straight toeplate is fitted to protect the toe in the same fashion. The forearm and forend both have slender shaping that wraps the barrel all the way to the muzzle. No muzzle cap is fitted and the stock is shaped to provide easy access to the 5/16" diameter ramrod. The ramrod does not have any provisions for threaded accessories. The side panel is fitted with a bone tear drop sideplate. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek for a right hand shooter. The square cheek piece is fitted with a bone oval inlay. The bone in the cheek has lifted slightly with a crack developing from being compressed by the wood as it has aged. The cheek is accented with a combination of raised and incised carving.

The Davide Pedersoli Frontier lock is styled in after the early locks by the Ketland & Co. The lock is finished to a dark brown, this flint lock is fitted with our a 7/8" English gun flint, our #FLINT-ENG-7. Be sure to order a dozen gun flints. This lock sparks well. The frizzen face shows some wear from use. The blue around the barrel vent has some discoloration from firing. Ignition is aided by the stainless steel vent liner, perfectly centered and correctly positioned well above the pan, to serve as a window on the center of the priming flash. Double lever double set triggers are correctly tuned to fire set or unset. You may cock the lock, or set the triggers, in any sequence. A tiny adjustment screw, between the two triggers, controls trigger release. When enabled, you can set a very light trigger release, ideal for match shooting, or hunting small game in moderate weather.

In used but well maintained condition this .36 caliber longrifle has a modest weight, Pedersoli flintlock, curly maple, and limited iron with bone accents. Order it for a ten day visual inspection.
