This flint .54 Lancaster County, Pennsylvania longrifle is offered in new, unfired condition. This rifle is stocked in curly maple with engraved brass furniture. The swamped barrel is finished to a smooth chocolate brown and the Siler flintlock is polished bright. This rifle has a 13-1/2" trigger reach for today's average size shooter. The rifle weights 7.8 pounds, and holds quite steady.
The .54 caliber swamped octagon Colerain barrel has a 38" length. The swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares slightly at the muzzle. The bore is cut rifled with six lands and radius bottom grooves, with a slow twist for patched roundball. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. Colerain rifle barrels are the favorite choice of today's best muzzle loading gun makers, because knowledgeable shooters demand Colerain's accuracy, inside and outside. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six "round bottom" grooves. Called "radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost. The barrel is finished to a smooth even brown, which nicely compliments the stock. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed 11-1/4" ahead of the breech. A browned iron blade front sight is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle.
The stock is a lovely piece of maple, stained to a medium brown with golden undertones to best reveal the figure. The buttstock has the classic angular lines of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The brass furniture is polished bright and will develop a natural patina from use. The buttplate comb is finished with broad flats, and the patchbox release button can be seen from above. The transition from the comb to the wrist is highlighted with raised carving that flows down into the buttstock. The raised carving around the tang is very well executed with smooth lines and well cleaned background. A single bolt passes through the tang and stock to engage the trigger plate below. Three pins retain the barrel to the forearm. The brass patchbox is neatly engraved on the door and panels. The door easily pops open to reveal a deep cut cavity for storing flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. Incised carving runs from the trigger plate back towards the toe on both sides of the buttstock.
The bottom view shows the engraved brass toe plate that is fitted to this rifle. The toeplate helps to protect this delicate areas of the stock when loading. The triggerguard is hand filed with crisp flats and is polished bright. Further up on the rifle a line of raised molding can be seen running along the edge of the ramrod channel. The ramrod pipes are brass with raised rings on the ends and paneled bodies. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded to accept 8-32 cleaning and loading accessories. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. The engraved brass side panel is neatly shaped and fitted with a classic square tail Lancaster County sideplate. The buttstock behind the cheek piece is hand carved with decorative scrolls.
Sure-fire ignition is provided by a large Siler flintlock. The lock plate has been polished bright. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. The single trigger provides a smooth release of the lock. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
This flint longrifle is offered in new, unfired condition. The .54 caliber bore is clean and ready for your upcoming big game hunts. This rifle will also serve the Revolutionary War reenactor well. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
