This flintlock fullstock longrifle has the traditional iron buttplate and triggerguard found on rifles from the Carolinas to Tennessee with a considerable amount of nickel silver inlays on the forearm, forend, and buttstock. The Jamestown school of longrifles often have more decoration than a typical Appalachian rifle. The L&R John Bailes lock has a late 18th to early 19th century style. The lock, barrel, and iron furniture have been finished to a smooth dark brown. The inlays are all very neatly inleted and finished flush. Weighing x.x pounds and having a trigger reach of 13-3/4", the rifle is made for today's average size shooter.
The .36 caliber 3/4" barrel is 44" in length. The 3/4" barrel gives the rifle a very modest weight even with the 44" length. Cut rifled with six narrow lands and wide grooves in a slow twist for round ball. The barrel is finished to a smooth even brown. The rear sight is dovetailed 10-1/2" from the breech. Older shooters may find this extra distance from the breech easier to use. The front sight is a nickel silver blade in a brass base, dovetailed behind the muzzle.
The curly maple stock is finished to a satin sheen. Maple is a correct choice for stock wood, known to have been used on many original rifles from the Carolina region. The buttstock has very attractive lines and the stock is stained to a golden brown which contrasts the dark brown finish on the lock, barrel and furniture as well as the bright nickel silver inlays. A classic crescent buttplate with a modest curve protects the end grain of the stock. The buttstock is fitted with a small oval nickel silver patchbox as well as many hearts and ovals. The breech is fitted with a medium length tang that extends to the mid-point of the wrist.
The toeplate and triggerguard are both retained by screws. The triggerguard is shaped in the style of a hand forged triggerguard with a thin grip rail with curled spoon in a traditional style. The muzzle end of the stock is shaped with relief to provide access to the ramrod. The end grain of the stock is fitted with a nickel silver muzzle cap. The ramrod is mounted through nickel silver ramrod pipes with raised rings and paneled flats. The ramrod has 10-32 threads and a jagged cleaning tip is fitted to the hidden end. The side panel is fitted with a flush mounted lozenge style sideplate. The raised cheek piece is shaped with a line of incised carving.
Finished to match the barrel, the L&R John Bailes flintlock has a crisp action and a well hardened frizzen. This smaller lock is a fine London design, in the style of John Bailes, gunmaker. Locks of this design are found on English pistols, rifles and fowlers of the 1770-1810 period. More complex than the small Siler lock, notice that the cock jaws point directly into the semi-waterproof pan. The unusual frizzen flange fits and seals the pan, keeping priming dry. The well designed tumbler and sear have raised bearing rings turned around axles, to minimize friction. Lock makers sometimes call this a “frictionless" or “ghosted" lock, because you can see through its internals, if viewed sideways. When using our 5/8" knapped gun flints, the lock will throw a shower of sparks into the pan. This lock has only a few marks on the frizzen face. Below the lock a set of double lever, double set triggers are installed. The triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set, or unset position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. Fast ignition is assured by the steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
