This percussion longrifle has the overall appearance of a mid 18th century longrifle that was converted to percussion in the early 19th century. Stocked in curly maple, the gun is trimmed in brass furniture, and features a large Siler percussion lock. The .40 caliber bore is bright and ready to shoot. Trigger reach is 14-1/4" and the weight is 8.6 pounds.
The 42" long .40 caliber straight octagon barrel is 13/16" wide by Green Mountain. The cut rifled barrel has eight equal lands and grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. Green Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The browned barrel is fitted with a flat top rear sight dovetailed 12" ahead of the breech and a very modern style steel blade front sight is dovetailed behind the muzzle. The barrel is retained to the stock with three steel pins.
The curly maple stock is finished to an amber color with darker figure. The buttstock has the angular lines of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The lock panels have some extra bulk on both the height and width. The forearm has a wide flat from the lock panel to the muzzle cap and could be brought to a feather edge to give it a slender appearance. The wide brass buttplate is retained with two steel screws. The flared tang is retained with a single bolt engaging the trigger plate below, the bolt has been left long. From below, the wide toeplate can be seen, along with the brass triggerguard that has been pinned to the stock. A brass muzzle cap is fitted to the end of the stock. The 3/8" wooden ramrod is secured by three ramrod pipes, one entry and two forward. A brass tip has been fixed to the ramrod, threaded 8-32 it is ready to accept your shooting and cleaning accessories. The left view shows the square cheekpiece carved into the buttstock. A flush mounted sideplate is fitted to the side panel. Two large head lock bolts engage the lock on the opposite side.
Ignition for the gun is provided by a percussion large Siler lock. The has a matte gray finish with a few scattered speckles. The drum is well supported by the lock plate and is fitted with a 1/4-28 threaded nipple with a nickel silver flash cup. The R.E. Davis double lever double set trigger is properly adjusted to fire from the set, or unset position. You may cock the lock or set the triggers in any order. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure.
This .40 caliber longrifle is used. The shaping on the lock panels and forearm are a little bulky, but it is functional and ready to shoot. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
