Made in the USA, by the Browning Arms Company, Morgan, Utah, this attractive halfstock Plains rifle is stocked in walnut, trimmed in iron, and fitted with a hooked breech, and a unique single set trigger. No longer made, the Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle is prized by shooters, for value and shooting performance. This example is used. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The factory sights have been replaced with non-adjustable sights. Weighing in at 9.3 pounds the rifle has a trigger reach of 13-1/4" making it well suited for today's average size shooter.
The .54 caliber 30" barrel is cut rifled with eight deep grooves, and a slow twist to shoot accurately with patched round balls. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. We recommend our .530" ball, .018" patch, Mink Oil tallow patch lubricant, and 85 grains of FFg black powder, using a No. 11 percussion cap. The top flat of the barrel is marked Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle, and the diagonal flats are marked with the caliber and the maker's information. The hooked breech has the traditional snail bolster, except this breech is decorated with an embossed ram's horn, in an attractive curl. The front sight has been replaced with a nickel silver blade with a brass base. The factory rear sight has been replaced with a semi-buckhorn and is dovetailed 6" ahead of the breech.
Our front view shows the traditional Hawken Plains Rifle profile of the Browning Mountain Rifle. Stocked in walnut with a dark reddish tone. The rifle is trimmed in iron, browned in the traditional fashion. The long toe plate protects this delicate area of the stock when loading. The forend is fitted with a poured pewter forend cap with separate browned iron entry pipe. The rifle is fitted with a scroll trigger guard mounted to a long triggerplate. The hooked breech has a long Hawken style tang that extends down the wrist. The combination of the long hooked breech and long triggerplate help to strengthen the wrist, a desirable feature for a Mountain Man, when trapping in Colorado. The stock is shaped with a square cheek piece for a right hand shooter.
The hooked breech allows the barrel to be easily dismounted for cleaning without risk of wetting the stock with water containing black powder residue. To dismount the barrel, put the lock on half cock, withdraw the ramrod, drift the keys past the underlugs, and the barrel can be lifted from the barrel channel for ease of cleaning. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by an oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle. The wooden ramrod is fitted with brass tips. The tip is threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories.
The percussion lock has a crisp action, and strong mainspring, for fast lock time and sure-fire reliability. This lock has a fly detent, allowing the use of the single set trigger. The trigger may be latched, or the hammer cocked, in any sequence. The single trigger has a unique hidden set trigger feature. Press the trigger forward to latch the trigger over-center, under the cam roller spring. A tiny adjustment screw controls the hair-light trigger release when set. The breech is fitted with a 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple for No. 11 percussion caps.
This rifle is used. The bore is bright, and has been well maintained. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted.
