Made in the USA, by the Browning Arms Company, Morgan, Utah, this attractive halfstock Plains rifle is stocked in walnut, trimmed in brass, and fitted with a hooked breech, and a unique single set trigger. No longer manufactured, the Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle is prized by collectors and shooters, for value and for shooting performance. This used gun is in excellent condition, factory finished, with some handling marks on the stock and brown finish typical of normal use. Weighing in at 9.6 pounds the rifle has a trigger reach of 13-1/4" making it well suited for today's average size shooter.

The .50 caliber 30" barrel is cut rifled with deep grooves, and a slow twist, to accurately shoot with patched round balls. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. We recommend our .490" ball, .018" patch, Mink Oil tallow patch lubricant, and 75 grains of GOEX FFg black powder, and a No. 11 percussion cap. The factory steel blade front sight has been replaced with a nickel silver blade front sight.

Our front view shows the traditional Hawken Plains Rifle profile of the Browning Mountain Rifle. Stocked in walnut, this rifle is trimmed in polished brass furniture. The brass has a few minor speckles of natural patina from use and handling. Our top view shows the comb of the brass buttplate, tapered comb of the buttstock, and the long Hawken style tang and hooked breech of the 1" octagon barrel. The top flat of the barrel is marked Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle, and the diagonal flats are marked with the caliber and the maker's name. Our bottom view shows the brass toeplate, and the long Hawken style triggerplate, with unique single set trigger, and the brass triggerguard with scroll grip rail for your hand. Notice the facets of the triggerguard, an identifying feature of the Jonathan Browning rifle. The back view reveals the early style squared cheek piece, and the single lock bolt, surrounded by the tear-drop escutcheon.

The percussion lock has a crisp action, and strong mainspring, for fast lock time and sure-fire reliability. The brown finish has a few small handling marks. This lock has a fly detent, allowing the use of the single set trigger. The trigger may be latched, or the hammer cocked, in any sequence. The hooked breech has the traditional snail bolster, except this breech is decorated with an embossed ram's horn, in an attractive curl. The single trigger has a unique hidden set trigger feature. Press the trigger forward to latch the trigger over-center, under the cam roller spring. A tiny adjustment screw controls the hair-light trigger release when set.

This used rifle is in excellent condition with a few small handling marks. The bore appears to be bright in well maintained condition. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
